Club Adventist
Welcome with open arms fellow believers who don’t see things the way you do.
And don’t jump all over them every time they do or say something you don’t agree with
– even when it seems that they are strong on opinions but weak in the faith department.
Remember, they have their own history to deal with. Treat them gently. Romans 14.1: The Message

Here is a question or two I might ask my Sabbath School class to get the discussion started:

1. Which of the stories about Abraham in this lesson showed the greatest faith on Abraham's part?

2. Which of the stories showed the least faith?

For 1 I'd say when he was asked to sacrafice Issac,

and for 2 there's a few, but I'd say the one about him trying to pass of his wife as his sister.

I am wondering if the obvious is really the right answer to this situation for Abram. That in leaving his country and kinsmen to follow God's direction was faith and instructing his wife to tell the Egyptians that she was his sister to preserve his life was a loss of faith. I see a huge opportunity for God to introduce to the Egyptians the God of Abram that they can see His power and that they will remember in time to come when He sends Moses to free his people much later of course. Abram's use of truth and error is also seen in the 20th Chap. of Genesis.
How would this tie in to Jesus instructions to "fear not him who can destroy the body, but Him who can throw both soul and body into hell? Better to die doing right then live practicing sin? It would indeed seem that Abram continued with this practice in Gen. 20. Would appreciate your insight.

Personally, I see Abram enduring about six trials of his faith:

1. leaving his fatherland for Canaan
2. dividing the land with Lot and putting up with the consequences
3. moving to Egypt due to famine with subsequent worries there
4. making friends with Abimalech with subsequent worries there
5. being asked to sacrifice Isaac
6. arranging Isaac's marriage with a relative back home instead of a close neighbor

I am not really sure that any one of these trials of faith were greater than any other trial. But it is a good talking point to get people thinking in a Sabbath School class because one trial can be bigger to one person than to someone else.
