Welcome with open arms fellow believers who don’t see things the way you do.
And don’t jump all over them every time they do or say something you don’t agree with
– even when it seems that they are strong on opinions but weak in the faith department.
Remember, they have their own history to deal with. Treat them gently. Romans 14.1: The Message

It Is Well is one of my favourite songs. The author's name is Stafford, if I remember correctly. It's too bad we don't get to sing it more in the modern worship sessions. It is very comforting.

Stan is funny but I do recall this story, but don't recall ever hearing the song. Maybe I have, but sung differently or something like that. That was a fantastic song either way.

Horatio Spafford was a Chicago businessman who lost a lot of his wealth in the Great Chicago Fire. The family wanted to get away for a while so they arranged a voyage to Europe. Mr. Spafford stayed behind to arrange some business matters.

The family's ship Ville de Havre was hit by a ship named the Loch Erin and sank quickly. The four daughters were all drowned, the youngest being washed from Mrs. Spafford's grasp. Some accounts say Mrs. Spafford was found unconscious, floating in the water.

When she arrived in England, she sent a message to her husband - "Saved alone". This tragedy inspired her husband to write the song "It Is Well".

Later some accounts say that Mr. Spafford thought he was the Messiah and went to Jerusalem. Anyway the family went to Jerusalem and started a medical work that is (last I knew) still going on.

"It is well" is a well-known military phrase used by sentinels for many years. Apparently it was used by the soldier who was guarding the prisoners on Joseph Bates' prison ship off the coast of England during the War of 1812. What is interesting is that as the soldier was saying everything was all right, prisoners who had sawed a hole in the side of the prison ship were slipping out the hole right underneath his feet.

Hope these few facts help. It's one of my favorite songs - I'll probably play it on my keyboard after I finish here.
