What makes music Christian?

Is it the tune?

Is it the lyrics?

Why?

John Thurber addresses these questions in his book "The Music of Heaven."

Good questions.

A composer [no less than J.S.Bach himself, actually] used to use popular melodies of the times as themes for his religious compositions.

My understanding is that some of the tunes to our hymns started out as drinking songs...However...........I must admit that when hearing the song,"Search me O Lord"......I still hear the tune "Now is the Hour"....

When a Christian makes music...

What makes a shout spiritual? "Shout to the Lord!"

What makes a a dance spiritual? "Praise His name with dancing."

"And whatever you do, whether in word or deed, do it all in the name of the Lord Jesus..."

I rewrote Father Christmas (by Lake) into good Christian lyrics.

Gregory,
May I suggest that it is none of the above? What makes music Christian is...
Christ in the heart.

If Christ is in the heart of the writer as s/he writes the song, then the song can be a Christian song to that writer. If Christ is in the heart of the performer as they perform the song, then the song can be a Christian song to that performer. If Christ is in the heart of the listener as they listen to the song, then the song can be a Christian song to that listener.

Back when I was a rebellious teen, Kansas was one of my favorite bands. I used to do some very unChristian partying to their albums. Christ was not on the throne of my heart then. However, this past summer my wife and I took a road trip and had time to listen to the Kansas anthology. We were both amazed at the Christian themes that we discovered in their music. Christ is on the throne of our hearts.

Just yesterday I was listening to the song Life in the Fast Lane by the Eagles and thinking what a great song to use to teach young people about the sad consequesnces of a life that revolves around drugs, sex, and money.

That's my $0.02.

giggle Ok Richard. I do know what you mean though. There were many songs that I really liked but never really listened to the words. Eventually as I got older and closer to my savior and actually listened to the words I knew why I don't listen to them that much anymore. I still have a lot of there albums, but don't listen to them anymore.

There is a lot to be said with having an honest look at how certain things affect our hearts and relationships. I appreciate your input!

...Or the beat or lack of one?

I think it's mostly the heart that determines whether it is Christian or not. As in does it come from the heart as an offering of worship and praise to our Lord and Our God? Does it lift our Creator up and make Him known and witness to, and/or help another? Or does it echo in our heart and speak to us of His Love and uplift and inspire and help us?

Of course that's an entirely different question from what do you think is appropriate music in the sanctuary for Sabbath worship service. bwink
