As Religious Liberties director in my church (Morris Park, Bx., NYC) I'm delivering a Power Point presentation of the sermon, but I'm adding an extra dimension. I'm encouraging the congregation to text me during my presentation with questions that I will respond to in an afternoon session.
My thinking is that many members are caught up in this modern texting, SMS, Tweeting culture that we're part of. This way people will hopefully engage themselves more intently due to the visual graphics and the novelty of being allowed to quietly ask questions during the sermon about the sermon.
Secondly, I'm working on a "co-op" sermon as the new Stewardship Director with the former director. I'm going to focus on Environmentalism as a form of stewardship (think of God's 1st command to take care of the Garden) and the former director will deal with the traditional tithes and offering approach. We will present this sermon as a conversation where the congregation can listen in.
What are your opinions about these plans? Any suggestions, criticisms and reflections would be much appreciated.
We need to reach our members and get them more engaged in spiritual things!
Alex (praying about this daily) I'd say that sounds pretty interesting. Not sure what I'd change at this point. You'd need to see how it goes and than get opinions, suggestions, criticisms and reflections. I will keep this in our prays. pk

Derek Morris, pastor of the Forest Lake church, does that when he preaches. The church has a website where one can watch live, and text in, if they so choose.

Which age group are you hoping to reach, abelisle? I realize that religious liberties will ultimately affect each and every one of us, what is your target audience for this sermon? In our congregation of approximately 200 persons, very few of the 30 and over crowd use texting as a means of communicating.

In our congregation of approximately 200 persons, very few of the 30 and over crowd use texting as a means of communicating. Being that I'm in NYC, more of the older folk are using modern technology. I myself am 61 but still trying to leave my childhood (according to my wife  ) I will find out when I do it. Who knows? Even EGW said we need to make things more captivating and interesting Alex (I'll post a report after I do this)

I'm sick to death of hearing about texting, especially in church. "Captivating and interesting" doesn't mean you have to have everyone's cell phone on and deal with the kids that are going to use this as an opportunity to text back and forth to each other during worship services. Not to mention calls that will come in on people's phones, interrupting the service.
But hey, what do I know?

Praise God - the experiment worked very well. I got 15 texts sent to my phone and all were pertinent questions to the sermon/powerpoint presentation I delivered. I used these to help in the afternoon follow-up discussion we had in a seminar I gave on national and global issues dealing with religious liberty. Everyone who spoke to me about the texting had favorable comments; I guess the ones who didn't think well of the experiment don't know how to text? Alex

Just because they didn't text to you during the sermon doesn't mean they don't know how to text...
It could be that they didn't have anything to say; or that they don't like the idea and chose not to participate; or that they left their cell phones in their cars; or left them turned off; or didn't want to use a service they pay for on the Sabbath; or didn't have anything positive to say and kept it to themselves; or were busy texting other people about the sermon; or were busy texting other people about other topics; or; or; or; ....

Something quite powerful happened this evening as a result of my "texting" experiment last Sabbath. I get a call on my cell phone that I didn't recognize. The caller on the other line says, " Pastor,I was a visitor at your church this Sabbath. Can I speak to you? I need someone to talk to about this problem I've had for over 30 years." I responded that I wasn't the Pastor , just the speaker that Sabbath but that I would be more than willing to speak with him about his problem, offer some advice and finally pray with him over the phone. This never would have happened if I had not given out my cellphone number this Sabbath! The Lord works in mysterious ways His wonders to perform!  Alex

Alex, I told my mom about your experiment with texting during the sermon. She was appalled. And I told her about your experience with the person who had a problem for 30 years. She said every church bulletin has the phone number of the church pastor on it. So if the person really wanted to talk, there were many opportunities for him to talk to a pastor. Anyway, just thought you might want to hear the reaction from one of the "older" members of a church.

Thanks for the feedback I thought the same thing. But the gentleman was a visitor, probably didn't keep the church bulletin and since my phone number was in his phone and he thought I was the pastor, he might have decided to call me on a whim. If some of the older, more rigid and conservative folk like your mom in my church felt the way she did, they didn't tell me. Alex (must be because they think I'm cute )

My church is conservative up to a point. They do have a lot of youth participating in the worship service with music. There's one singer in my church who plays her guitar to her own compositions. Then there's the country/western gospel duo who sing okay, but the lady has hair poofed out like Little Orphan Annie. If she sits in front of you in the pews you have to move because of all that hair!
