Club Adventist
Welcome with open arms fellow believers who don’t see things the way you do.
And don’t jump all over them every time they do or say something you don’t agree with
– even when it seems that they are strong on opinions but weak in the faith department.
Remember, they have their own history to deal with. Treat them gently. Romans 14.1: The Message

How can the magazine Spectrum, enlarge the myopic views within some Adventist circles?

Good question, Neil.

I have noticed that religious and intellectual myopia is cleared up in me each time I actually see the world through other folks' eyes. I am a very privileged educated white male with a host of advantages and given assumptions for which I did not ask and am mostly unaware. I like power. I want truth. As I seek to understand my own self, I see a lot of shared blind spots among my fellow believers. When I write on Spectrum or ask others to write, it is to create experiences of contingency in which we can all see our assumptions for what they are: constructions of meaning-making. I want folks to realize that we all have creative responsibility in defining Adventism, each day. I have very little truck for those who just complain about this or that belief - the fact is that unless we are thinking actively about how to apply our beliefs/doctrines to our ethical witness in the world, we are wasting God's gift of belonging to a faith community.

There are two things that I believe that Spectrum can do to help here.

1. Provide space for folks to talk freely.

2. Continue to increase the spectrum of ways that folks engage with Adventism.

I hope that by using media to spread the variety of Adventisms, we will not only extend our vision of what Adventist means and even increase entries into the church and its impact on the larger culture.
